Consolidated Credit and Oppenheim Law To Host Free Seminar For Underwater Homeowners

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- Over 400,000 homeowners in South Florida are still drowning in negative equity, according to a recent Zillow report. That is nearly 43 percent of all homes that have a mortgage in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.  So while there are signs of a housing recovery, buying or selling a home remains a difficult task.

With that in mind, Consolidated Credit  is joining forces with Oppenheim Law, a nationally-recognized foreclosure defense law firm, to host a free seminar, “What To Do If I Am Underwater” on Saturday October 13th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Consolidated Credit’s Fort Lauderdale office.

Past or present clients of Consolidated Credit and Oppenheim Law, and any member of the public, who owes more on their home than it is worth, are encouraged to attend. However space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged.

Attendees will hear from three speakers who will discuss the current state of the foreclosure crisis and the programs that are available to underwater homeowners.

Roy Oppenheim, Senior Partner, Oppenheim Law

  • From Wall Street To Main Street, Oppenheim has developed a reputation as a sound attorney and astute legal commentator. After serving as an associate for two highly distinguished Wall Street firms, he co-founded Oppenheim Law in 1989 with his wife Ellen. They built their practice representing small builders and other real estate companies. However as the housing bubble burst the firm has transformed into one of South Florida’s most successful foreclosure defense law firms.  Roy shares his insight through his South Florida Law Blog and as a guest contributor to Yahoo! Homes. He has also been cited in the Huffington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today among others.
  • Roy will speak about what underwater homeowners should do when facing the threat of foreclosure. Oppenheim will advise attendees on what he considers to be the best foreclosure alternatives, including short sales, and what homeowners can do to maximize the chances of receiving a loan modification.

Jorge Ruiz, Senior Housing Counselor, Consolidated Credit Counseling

  • Ruiz has been a Consolidated Credit Counselor for over seven years. He is certified by the Center for Financial Literacy as a Credit Counselor and Residential Housing Counselor. Mr. Ruiz has specialized training from the Federal Trade Commission, NeighborWorks, and The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.
  • Jorge’s presentation will revolve around how a mortgage delinquency can dramatically impact a homeowner’s credit score, and what can be done to minimize the damage.

Maria Gaitan – Housing and Business Development Manager

  • Gaitan has twenty years of management, lending and business development experience with the fourth largest banking institution in the United States, and six years of direct nonprofit management and program development experience in the credit and housing counseling industry. She has delivered financial educational to corporations, nonprofit organizations and government entities across South Florida.
  • Maria will discuss Florida’s Hardest Hit Program, which provides mortgage assistance for unemployed homeowners.  She will detail what kind of assistance is available and who qualifies for the program.

A question and answer session will follow their presentations. This informative program will be held in the Community Education Center of Consolidated Credit’s South Florida Office, at 5701 West Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday October 13th.

To attend “What To Do If I Am Underwater”, please email housing@consolidatedcredit.org to register.  Walk-ins will be welcomed as space allows, but priority will be given to those who RSVP prior to the event.
